Defining Your "Why?"

I wanted to make my first post something you can do before even stepping foot in the gym. Actually, it's a concept that can be applied in nearly every part of your life.

Stop whatever you're doing right now and ask yourself, "why am I doing this?" (You are most likely reading this post, so your answer to that question is probably going to be "because Hannah needs 150 views on her blog for her assignment", so thank you for helping x).

The concept of Defining Your "Why" was coined by Simon Sinek, who has since gone on to write a book and present a TED Talk on the topic (I have linked this below in case anyone was curious).

Sinek's TED Talk addresses the topic with a focus on leadership in business and entrepreneurship, however the concept is not limited to that. Defining Your "Why" is all about setting goals; having a reason for your actions; and having a clear outcome of what you hope to gain from acting in a certain way. It may be something as simple as "Why am I making dinner? Because its 6pm and I would like to be less hungry." It sounds quite ridiculous to question absolutely everything you do in your day-to-day life, but the theory still applies, no matter how mundane or unimportant an action may seem.

In terms of the gym, I wish I had asked myself "Why?" when I first began to go more regularly, as I probably would have made far better and faster progress towards whatever my goal was at that time, instead of quite mindlessly switching from exercise to exercise, with no end goal in my mind. Having an end goal in mind would have allowed me to think more clearly about what I needed to do to get there.

So whether you're very new to the gym, an already avid gym goer, or have no interest in the gym at all, take time to think about your "why".
